November 7, 2025 – 10:00am cst

Herman Kim, also known as Kwang Chung Kim, of Springfield, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the age of 84, in the presence of family. He was formerly a resident of the Chicagoland area for over 50 years.

He was born in South Korea on January 19, 1941, the second of four children and the eldest son of Kim Myung Young and Sohn Myung Sook. His older sister Sun Sil survives him, as do his beloved wife Sunsook, loving children Jeana, Judy, and Susan, cherished grandchildren Zoe, Charlie, Hannah and Verity, and 10 nieces and nephews.

Herman was a graduate of the Yang Chung High School and the Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea. He was a gregarious and kind man who kept lifelong friends, including four friends from high school who would eventually all relocate to the Chicagoland area, and whom he affectionately dubbed the “Class of ’59.”

He emigrated to the U.S. from South Korea in 1967 at the age of 26 and later became a U.S. Citizen. He pursued graduate studies at Villanova University and met his wife Sunsook on the East Coast before relocating to Chicago where they were married on December 23, 1971.

In his career, Herman worked as a chemist for several companies, including the original Perkin-Elmer, before establishing and running his own dry cleaning business for many years. For over 10 years until his retirement in 2020, he worked at Wal-Mart as a cashier and was recognized for his long service.

Herman and his wife were members of the Hanmee Presbyterian Church in Itasca, IL for over 50 years where he also served the community as an elder. Herman was an avid reader, a generous friend, and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a special man with a deep faith, a joyful sense of humor and a poetic spirit who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A visitation for Herman will be held Friday, November 7, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Swan Lake Chapel, Ridgewood Cemetery, 9900 N. Milwaukee Ave, Des Plaines, IL, followed by a celebration of life service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A committal service will occur Friday, November 7, 2025 from 11:15 AM to 11:45 AM, at Ridgewood Cemetery, 9900 N. Milwaukee Ave, Des Plaines, IL.
