SEPTEMBER 17, 1931 – JANUARY 2, 2022

My Life To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 A Time To Be Born Alcurtis was born September 17, 1931, to the union of McKinley and Luetisha Smith Frencher in Macon, Mississippi She was the fourth child of their twelve children. A Time To Serve Alcurtis attended school in Macon Mississippi. Alcurtis had a love for the field of cosmetology, and worked alongside her mom in her beauty shop. Once she graduated from Noxubee County High School, she pursued her certification and became a licensed cosmetologist. She relocated to East St. Louis and then to Chicago, Illinois. She worked alongside her aunt, Willie Frencher in her beauty shop. Alcurtis also worked as a mail clerk at Boise Cascade, a teacher assistant for Chicago Public Schools and later became a mail handler for the United States Postal Service. A time To Love Alcurtis met Henry Howard Ivy, the love of her life. They were married June 17, 1949. They enjoyed being married for over fifty-four years before Hank went to be with the Lord. To this union Herman Curtis, JoeNathan who preceded her in death, Belinda, Loretta, and Beth Michelle who also preceded her in death, were born. In the sixties they were blessed with another son into the Ivy family, Herbert Saunders. In the nineties yet another additional blessing came as Yvonne and Jaha Knight werer added to the Ivy clan. A Time To Build Alcurtis had a powerful voice as a young child. She accepted Christ at early age at the New Hope Baptist Church in Macon, Mississippi. Al loved to sing and found herself representing her High School in Choral competitions. She loved singing unto the Lord most of all and sang everywhere she went. Alcurtis was a part of a gospel group, the Mayberry and Frencher Singers and sang throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. A Time to Labor Alcurtis joined Walls Memorial C.M.E. Church upon relocating to Chicago in the early 1950’s. Al was very active in many facets of the church life including being Sunday School teacher, Missionary, choir member, Board of Evangelism, and the Beautifying Committee just to name a few. A Time For Transition In 1973 Alcurtis suffered an injury at work but she never let that stop her from serving God, her family and her community. Her faith in her Savior kept her through several surgeries, medications, therapy sessions and numerous doctors’ appointments. She would call you and encourage you to serve God.
