Michael “Mike” Beatty

Michael “Mike” Beatty

September 11, 1933 – January 25, 2021

Beatty, Michael “Mike”, 87, Orland Park, passed away peacefully after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his family on January 25, 2021. Born on a farm in County Roscommon, Ireland to Patrick and Mary (nee Durr), Mike was the fifth of seven children. As a young teenager, Mike went to Carrick-on-Shannon to learn the grocery business from his father’s cousin at Campbell’s store. When he was 24, Mike married Mary McDonnell and they sailed to America for their honeymoon. They chose to stay, becoming proud citizens in the early 1960’s and settling in Chicago, becoming active members of St. Rene parish. Mike and Mary were hard working entrepreneurs, opening a beauty shop and grocery stores in Berwyn, Cicero and Chicago after Mike’s successful career as a store manager for A & P.

Mike loved nothing better than a good poker game with his kids and grandkids. “Just one more buy-back” he’d say to keep the game from ending. He also loved to golf with his A & P buddies and other great friends over the last 50 years. Mike kept his mind sharp throughout his retirement by “studying the ponies” and making his daily 40 cent bets at the OTB. When he wanted to unwind, he’d relax in his favorite chair and watch his beloved sports teams: The Cubs, Blackhawks and Bears.

Mike is survived by his children Marie (Grant) Clouston, Pat (Jeannette), Fran (Stuart) Skinner, and John (Terri), and his grandchildren Rosemarie, Michael, Katie, Patrick, Lauren, and Tyler. He is also survived by his siblings Padraig (Carrie), Kathleen, Joseph and many nieces and nephews. He was the beloved and devoted husband of 50 years of the late Mary (nee McDonnell), his siblings Frances (Paddy) McGee, Sean, and Eamon and his in-laws Joe Mahon and Mary Beatty.

Due to the pandemic, Mike’s family will be holding a celebration of his life at a later date when friends and family can gather together and share their stories. A private Funeral Mass for the immediate family will be celebrated at St. Michael Church in Orland Park.
